Aftercare
by Anson Wang
Summer afternoon, children yelling
Cursing each other and their families
White hot sunlight cast on flat nose tips
Peeling at rainbow foam
Dispersing it into the wind
Work and the never ending burdens
Trinkets and toys made in China
Encroaching on stacks of paperwork
Euphoric laughter. Finding commonality
Wooden blocks that scratch the ceiling
What works and what doesn’t
Recurrent suffering
Balls to throw
Trash to pick up
Kick it across the room
Let it decompose in dust and dirt
Say Hallelujah!
Rejoice in the egos
How they soften when touched
Be. Just be on this corner, on the block
Waiting to cross the street
3:46 on Thursday Listen to the wind
Blowing hot air in your face Listen to the motors
Cars disseminating Carbon Dioxide Just right
On this corner Where the school sits
Forget work and the names tied
To the hands you’re holding
Forget how you were
When it all felt the same
Let the day come Forget wanting to have a part
Just wait | Cross
